How to Maintain a Healthy Beagle

Out of the many dog breeds out there, beagles are not known for their health problems. They do have some health problems they are prone to when not getting the right level of care and this includes such things as obesity, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, back problems and hip dysplasia.

When you work with a reputable breeder, you can avoid a lot of problems. First, they are going to provide you with a health certificate for the puppy so you never have to worry about some of the issues that come with puppy problems. Second, the breeder will screen their breeding stock to make better breeding decisions and avoid problems. Third, you can check with the Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals to see if the breeder participates in the available screening tests.

You should also be taking your beagle to the veterinarian on an annual basis. This allows the vet to run blood work, check the weight of the dog and various other statistics. You never want to let your dog go too long in between vet visits because if there is an issue, you want to catch it while there is still time to get the necessary treatment.

Your beagle needs to remain active. This means you need to allot time on a regular basis to take your dog outside for long walks, take them for hikes and runs and let them be a dog. When you promote outdoor activity, they are less likely to develop health problems as a result of being overweight or obese.

Maintain the right diet for your beagle as well. If you’re wondering what you should be feeding your dog, talk with the breeder, the vet and read [Link to Post on Diet] for more information.
