How to Care for Your Beagle

There is a significant amount of dog care involved with any kind of dog and a beagle is no different. Beagles are intelligent and brave and known for having a great temperament. That being said, you have to promote these behaviours in the way you interact with them and care for them on a daily basis.

Beagles need to be kept on a leash. Since they enjoy sniffing out scents, they can easily run in order to chase a scent and you don’t want to go looking for your dog.

You also need to remember that beagles are intelligent and this can lead to being stubborn. Positive reinforcement works best with them.

The health of a beagle is high in comparison to many other breeds. They are average shedders and have short hair, which means you won’t have to take them to be groomed as often as other breeds. When you bathe them, you should use a mild shampoo and then brush them with a firm bristled brush. It’s a good idea to look at their ears on a regular basis to avoid infection. If they are shaking their head, scratching or have an odour at their ears, they may have an infection.

Beagles are active so they need daily exercise. This will also help you to manage their weight. Engage their senses with playing fetch, taking a hike and spending time outside. Hide treats indoors or outdoors and let them enjoy the sniffing stimulation that they were born for.

The more you learn to care for your dog, the happier they will be. They don’t ask for much, so you simply have to get into a routine. When you keep your dog happier, they will be better for the family. By concentrating on their health, you can also ensure they will be around for a very long time.
